What can REPLACER do?

Let's say that you have some text in a foreign language and you want a list of all the unique words in sequential order (click the image below to make it larger, then use your back-button to return to this page):

To get a vocabulary list, you first choose a dictionary. In the first example, we chose a "Traditional Characters to Jyutping" dictionary, and in the second, a dictionary with all the definitions for the Cantonese.

The next thing REPLACER can do is to simply "replace the text" with what's in the dictionary:

This time, notice that the second dictionary was a more simple dictionary that contained the Jyutping and a one-word English translation. Many times, it's easy for a beginning student to master one simple definition, and then later, learn more complete definitions.

We could have the output displayed sequentially, where the original traditional character is displayed, the the dictionary's definition following it.

And, finally, we could have REPLACER make an "interlinear text" where the Foreign language is directly above the dictionary definition. We can quickly create an "interlinear" of complete movie scripts, chapters in books and newspaper articles. We can send the interlinear to a PDF so that we can study it later:

HYPERTEXT

With HYPERTEXT, you browse for a large text file of a book (that's own your laptop), and pick a word or phrase that you want to study. A list of all the sentences that contain the word or phrase will be generated, and you can study tem directly or create a PDF. Perhaps you are studying how "I may" is used in novels. Here's a partial list of all the sentences that have the words "I may" in the classic Tom Sawyer book:

The beauty of REPLACER is that you can quickly add vocabulary and definitions to an existing dictionary, and even create new dictionaries in any different language. Perhaps you have learned French, and are now learning Cantonese... you can make an interlinear of Cantonese to French, so that you can study the new language with the one you already know. No longer are you limited to purchasing an expensive interlinear book.. you nca do create your own, in any language or phonetic script, quickly and easily.

What is an Interlinear text?

During the 1880s, interlinear text was very popular to learn multiple languages. You would attend a lecture where a native speaker would read a book, and you would follow along in a text. Then, you would take the interlinear text home to read several times. here's an example of what the text looked like:
